The hospital designer did visit the hospital few years after its’ inauguration and found that each family must take a photo with the newborn in front of the hospital as a token of pride of having delivered their baby there.
The Lucrecia Paim Maternity hospital is the main maternity hospital and referral center and teaching hospital in Angola. The hospital includes 160 bed with a total built-up area of 12,000 m².
Hospital Design Concept
The healthcare architect's challenge of Lucrecia Paim Maternity Hospital design is that it consisted of a campus, including three buildings built in the WW1, the forties and fifties, respectively, with the clinical services scattered in between. Patients had to be wheeled from one building to another, under the sun, rain and elements in order to conduct diagnosis or treatment.
The other challenge was the absence of any life-safety measures. The main building, 10 stories height, had a single unprotected staircase that happened to be just above the main electrical switchboard. Any incident would have been a catastrophy of unmatched proportions.
The design united the three buildings through a common podium, that housed the outpatients clinics and emergency, as well as provided a second core that includes protected stairs and visitors elevators; while the main tower was renovated and the site circulation revamped.
The resultant hospital design and subsequent construction was a subject of pride of everybody in Luanda.
